BD Biosciences

BD Biosciences is a leading medical supplies and instrumentation company. One device they produce is the flow cytometer, used in clinical and research settings. Our project was to optimize a verification procedure used when testing flow cytometers.

Clinic Project

Clinic is a year long capstone project. Teams of senior and junior engineering students tackle an industry project for a year. Teams solve a technical problem, write a midyear and final report, and present on the completed work at the end of the year.

Our team of five focused on optimizing the sample manipulation workflow. This workflow can be broken down into processing blood, performing calculations, and pipetting dilution pools.

I spearheaded the improvement on calculating concentrations. After understanding what information went into the calculations, I developed an intuitive interface using a Python GUI to automate calculations. User testing was used to improve the interface and confirm key features integrated into the existing workflow.

This will replace the predicate method of manual calculations. Changing this process increases precision and creates a traceable testing record, crucial in the highly regulated biomedical devices field.

Implementing all of the improvements to the sample manipulation workflow had a projected time savings of 65%.
